UICC calls for coordinated action against infections that contribute to the global cancer burden |

Geneva, 4th February 2010 – On the occasion
of World Cancer Day, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC),
the Cervical Cancer Action (CCA) coalition and the International Union Against
Cancer (UICC) call for the implementation of comprehensive strategies to reduce
cervical cancer — one of the leading causes
of cancer among women in developing countries, and the second most common
cancer in women worldwide.

World cancer Day 4 February: Are you ready? |
What have you planned for World
Cancer Day this year? On 4 February 2010, the International Union Against
Cancer (UICC) will launch its new campaign “Cancer can be prevented too”. This new theme focuses on how the risk
of developing cancer can significantly be reduced through simple measures
related to tobacco use, alcohol consumption, sun exposure, healthy weight and
protection against cancer-causing infections. UICC invites you to join the
campaign and offers you a number of traditional and innovative resources.

The ECCA is again working with the International
Union Against Cancer (UICC), the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO), the
Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECCL), the ECCA’s institutional
and individual members across Europe to hold the 4th European Cervical
Cancer Prevention Week from 24 to 30 January, 2010. Cervical cancer is unique in that we already know
exactly what we have to do to prevent almost every case as effective
screening and vaccination programmes could virtually eliminate cervical
cancer in Europe. However, while we know what to do, the majority of
European countries in Europe still have not implemented these
programmes.
